Night Tennis in Cairns

Cairns is even hotter than Brisbane, more humid than Sydney, and gets the wettest summers of any Australian capital region. Night tennis isn't optional in FNQ -- it's the only sane time to play.

Top Lit Courts in Cairns

Cairns International Tennis Centre (Endeavour Park): 13 floodlit courts, FNQ's tournament hub. Open to 10pm. Smithfield Tennis Club: 4 lit courts, northern beaches. Atherton Tennis Club: 4 lit courts at altitude (cooler). Mareeba Tennis Club: 4 lit courts, drier inland. Innisfail Tennis Club: 4 lit courts (south of Cairns).

Tropical Climate Reality

FNQ has two seasons. Dry (May-Oct): 18-26C nights, low humidity, perfect tennis weather. Wet (Nov-Apr): 24-29C nights, humidity 75-90%, daily storms. Storms typically hit afternoon and clear by 7pm.

Tropical Tennis Gear

Humidity kills strings, dampens balls, and saturates grips fast. Carry 3+ dry-feel overgrips per session. Cooling towel is mandatory. LED balls cut through humid haze under lights. Pressureless balls outlast pressurised in wet season storage.

Storm Strategy

Cairns clubs are storm-savvy -- most refund or rebook if rain interrupts within 30 min of start. Court squeegees are common at clubhouses for drying surface puddles after brief showers.

Hydration in FNQ

1 litre water + electrolytes per hour minimum. Heat-stress symptoms can appear within 30 min when humidity exceeds 80%. See our nutrition guide and heat tennis tips.
