Social Tennis Night Ideas

Whether you're organising a club social, a birthday tennis event, or just a Saturday night with mates — these ideas will make your tennis night one people actually turn up to.

Fun Game Formats (Beyond Regular Sets)

Standard scoring is fine for comp, but social tennis is about variety and inclusivity. Mix in these formats to keep things fresh:

King / Queen of the Court

👥 6–16~60 min

One pair stays on court as "kings." Challengers play a single point against them. Win the point, you take their spot. Lose, you go to the back of the queue. Fast-paced and high-energy.

Round Robin Doubles

👥 8–162–3 hours

Everyone rotates partners. Play short sets (first to 4 games) with different partners each round. Total individual wins determines the champion. Best format for mixing skill levels.

Cardio Tennis

👥 4–1245 min

No scoring, no pressure. A coach or organiser feeds balls rapid-fire, and players rotate through stations — volleys, groundstrokes, overheads, fitness stations. Add music for atmosphere.

Tie-Break Shootout

👥 4–2060–90 min

Every match is a single tie-break (first to 7, win by 2). Quick, dramatic, and perfect for large groups. Run it as a knockout bracket for extra intensity.

Glow Tennis

👥 4–860–90 min

Turn off the floodlights and play with LED balls, glow overgrips, and reflective gear. More laughing than actual tennis, but unforgettable. Works best as a 30-minute segment within a larger social.

Around the World

👥 6–1220–30 min

All players line up behind the baseline, alternating sides. Hit the ball and run to the back of the other line. Miss, and you're out. Last two standing play a dramatic 1-point final.

Themed Tennis Night Ideas

🌙 Glow Night

LED balls, glow accessories, blacklight paint on the court lines. Neon dress code. Play favourite songs through a portable speaker.

🎃 Halloween Tennis

Costumes on court, prize for best outfit. Orange balls. Mini lolly bags as match prizes. October social events love this one.

🎄 Christmas Social

Tinsel on the net posts, Secret Santa exchange, mince pies on the sideline. End with a "Christmas tree" trophy for the tournament winner.

🍕 Pizza & Tennis

Order pizza for intermission. Round robin format, pizza break at the halfway mark. Simple, sociable, and almost universally popular.

How to Run a Glow Tennis Session

This is our specialty, so here's the full recipe:

  1. Choose a court without automatic lights — or one where you can turn the floodlights off and back on. A dim court with some ambient light works better than total darkness.
  2. Get enough LED balls — at least 6 for a doubles session. Balls roll into the dark and take time to find, so extras save time. Our 6-packs are ideal.
  3. Hand out glow accessoriesglow overgrips and reflective wristbands make each player visible.
  4. Keep rallies short and fun — tie-breaks, king of the court, or around the world work best. Long baseline rallies in the dark get old fast.
  5. Take photos and videos — glow tennis is incredibly photogenic. The LED ball trails make amazing long-exposure shots.
  6. Have regular tennis ready as backup — some people want to play properly after the novelty round. Switch the lights back on for the second half.
