Tennis for Couples

Forget dinner and a movie. Tennis is the date night that's actually good for your relationship — and your fitness. Here's how to make it work, even if one of you has never held a racket.

Why Tennis Works as a Couples Activity

Most couples' activities are passive — you sit next to each other watching a screen or eating food. Tennis is active, face-to-face, and requires communication. You're problem-solving together (in doubles), cheering each other on, and sharing endorphins from actual exercise.

It's also one of the few sports where mixed-skill-level pairs can genuinely have fun together, provided you pick the right format.

Handling the Skill Gap

The biggest challenge for tennis couples is when one player is significantly better than the other. Here's how to bridge the gap without anyone getting frustrated:

Both beginners

Start with a group lesson together. Learning at the same pace bonds you and removes any self-consciousness. Hit at the park afterward to practise what you learned.

One beginner, one experienced

Don't play competitive singles. Instead: the experienced player feeds balls to the beginner. It's coaching, not competing. Or play "co-op" against the wall — hit alternate shots and keep count of your combined rally.

Both intermediate+

Play singles, but with a twist: the stronger player plays left-handed, or serves underhand, or only hits to one half of the court. Handicaps that are funny, not patronising.

Very different levels

Play doubles with another couple. Pair the two stronger players against the two developing players — or mix it so each team has one strong and one developing player. Doubles is inherently more social and less intense.

Date Night Tennis Ideas

🌙 Glow Tennis Date

Book a court after sunset. Bring LED tennis balls and glow overgrips. It's romantic in the most unexpected way — laughing together in the dark, chasing a glowing ball, taking silly photos. End with fish and chips from the shop down the road.

🍷 Tennis & Wine

Play for an hour, then bring out a picnic blanket courtside. Wine (or sparkling), cheese, crackers. Many parks with tennis courts have great grassy areas right next to them. Summer evenings only.

🏆 Challenge Match

Play a tie-break. Loser cooks dinner / does the dishes / chooses next date night. Low stakes, high entertainment. Best of 5 tie-breaks if you're competitive.

👫 Couples Comp

Many tennis clubs run mixed doubles competitions. It's a weekly commitment (8-12 weeks), but you get a built-in date night AND a social circle. Several Melbourne clubs run Tuesday night mixed doubles.

The Unwritten Rules of Couples Tennis

  1. Don't coach unless asked. "Nice shot!" is always welcome. "You should turn your hips more" is not — unless they specifically asked for feedback.
  2. Match your intensity to your partner. Going 100% against someone learning is not impressive. It's inconsiderate. Save the winners for your competition matches.
  3. Celebrate their progress. If your partner just started and they hit a backhand in, that IS a big deal. Act like it.
  4. Keep the mood light. This is not Wimbledon. If someone double faults, laugh it off. The point of couples tennis is spending quality time together.
  5. Take turns choosing the format. Sometimes one person wants a workout. Sometimes the other wants a casual rally. Alternate who decides.

Night Tennis: The Perfect Couples Activity

Evening tennis works brilliantly for couples because:

  • Courts are emptier — no audience for your mishits
  • Cooler temperatures — more comfortable, longer sessions
  • LED balls create a uniquely fun atmosphere — very "date night"
  • Post-tennis dinner tastes better when you've earned it
  • It's cheaper than most evening activities — $10–$20 for court hire vs $100+ for dinner
