Night Tennis in Canberra
Canberra runs hot in summer and cold in winter, which makes night play essential half the year and brutal the other half. Here's where to play after dark, what it costs, and the gear that handles ACT conditions.
Top Lit Courts in Canberra
Lyneham Tennis Centre: 16 courts, full floodlights, hits 10pm. Mix of clay, hard, indoor. Tennis ACT's flagship venue. National Sportsplex (Lyneham): 8 lit hard courts, casual hire via PlayHQ. Weston Creek Tennis Club: 6 floodlit hard courts, Stirling. Tuggeranong Tennis Club: 4 lit courts, social comp Tuesday/Thursday nights.
Suburb clubs with lights: Yarralumla, Forrest, Reid, Ainslie, Manuka, Curtin, Hawker, Belconnen, Gungahlin Lakes. Most accept casual hire when not booked for comp.
Best Time to Play
Summer (Dec-Feb): Daytime hits 35°C. Play 7pm onwards, courts cool by 9pm. Long twilight — sunset 8:15pm in late December. Autumn (Mar-May): Crisp evenings, 10-15°C. Ideal night tennis weather. Winter (Jun-Aug): Frost on courts, 0-5°C nights. Indoor at Lyneham preferred. Spring (Sep-Nov): Variable wind, 12-20°C nights. Peak season returns.
Gear for Canberra Conditions
Cold air = dead balls. Use pressureless balls for winter sessions. LED balls work well at suburb courts where lighting is patchy. Glow overgrips charge under floodlights and stay visible if a light fails mid-rally.
Cold strings lose tension fast. See our string tension guide — drop 1-2 lbs in winter. Bring spare overgrips for sweaty hands when you finally warm up.
Court Hire & Booking
Most ACT public courts use PlayHQ or Bookacourt. Tennis ACT members get discounts at Lyneham. Casual hire $12-$22/hour after 6pm. Indoor courts $30-$45/hour. Book 7+ days ahead in summer — Lyneham fills fast.
